A brief change seen on Apple’s software page revealed an important detail about the naming system for the operating systems to be unveiled at WWDC 2025. Before the event, which will begin on June 9 at Turkey time, when we visited developer.apple.com, we noticed that the new versions were listed as “iOS 26,” “iPadOS 26,” and “macOS 26” on Apple’s beta software download page. This page, which was online for a short time, later reverted to showing the old version numbers.
Apple accidentally revealed iOS 26!
Apple has long named its operating systems using sequential version numbers. Under this system, iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 were released last year. However, some leaks have suggested that this year, instead of sequential numbering, the software names will now use numbers corresponding to the calendar year.

The page we viewed is the first concrete evidence confirming these claims. Despite not having been officially announced yet, the presence of “iOS 26,” “iPadOS 26,” and “macOS 26” on Apple’s official developer portal indicates that the naming change has been adopted across the entire system.
The page being taken down shortly after its appearance suggests that the change was accidentally published early. However, this mistake has already revealed important information about the new operating systems expected to be announced at Apple’s WWDC 2025 event.
Current beta versions still use the old naming convention, such as iOS 18.5, iPadOS 18.5, and macOS 15.5. However, the new naming structure is expected to be integrated into all Apple platforms alongside WWDC.
The content displayed also included “Download restore images” links for iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, as well as details such as “View all” and “Release Notes.” This indicates that updates have been prepared and integrated not only at the headline level but also in the page structure. Similarly, there was a new section labeled “macOS 26” for macOS, and a download link for Apple Silicon-powered Macs was visible.
This development, which occurred just hours before WWDC began, revealed that Apple is undergoing a technical and terminological transformation in its software updates. All eyes are now on the official announcements at WWDC 2025, where the new operating system is expected to be referred to directly as “iOS 26” instead of “iOS 19.”
