OpenAI, one of the leading companies in the artificial intelligence sector, has made a significant change in its infrastructure strategy. The company reached an agreement with Google Cloud after the negotiations were completed in May. With this collaboration, OpenAI has added an alternative channel to the infrastructure process it only runs on Microsoft Azure.

This move by OpenAI will anger Microsoft

The agreement with Google draws attention as a move to increase OpenAI’s processing power capacity. The company’s annual revenue approaching $10 billion brings with it especially high-capacity infrastructure needs.

The advanced processing infrastructure provided by Google Cloud will both enable existing artificial intelligence models to work more efficiently and accelerate the development process of new models. This rapprochement between OpenAI and Google took place despite the competition between the two companies in the sector.

While ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, has become a tool that challenges Google’s dominance in the search engine market; Google’s DeepMind unit is also directly competing with OpenAI in artificial intelligence models.

OpenAI, which has been in a deep partnership with Microsoft since 2019, has only used Azure infrastructure until now. Microsoft had invested billions of dollars in the company and gained special access rights. However, OpenAI turned to new data center solutions in October of last year. The main reason for this change was Microsoft’s inability to provide servers with sufficient speed.

The new agreement with Google Cloud shows that the technical dependency on Microsoft has been loosened. According to the latest information, the parties are currently negotiating an agreement that will reorganize Microsoft’s shareholding in OpenAI.
