The Punisher, one of the dark and tough characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is preparing to return to the screens with his own story this time. The new production, in which Jon Bernthal will once again play the lead role, will meet the audience on Disney+ and will be broadcast in the format of a television movie. Preparations for the recently announced project are progressing faster than expected.
A new Punisher movie is coming
According to information conveyed by sources close to Marvel, the shooting of the Punisher special will begin in mid-July. The shooting is planned to last approximately two weeks and be completed in early August.
It is stated that Jon Bernthal will directly move on to the Spider-Man 4 set after this project. The Punisher character appeared briefly in the Daredevil: Born Again series released this year. However, it is now certain that his role in the Marvel universe will expand in the future.
Bernthal was the person who directly shaped the story in the new production. The actor wrote the script with director Reinaldo Marcus Green, with whom he worked on the We Own the City series. Green also sits in the director’s chair. This special project shows that Bernthal’s connection with the character is not limited to acting alone and that he is also involved in the creative process.
The main villain that will be at the center of the special is stated to be Ma Gnucci, known from the comics. Ma Gnucci, a female crime lord, has an important place especially in the Punisher series called Welcome Back, Frank.
In this series, the Punisher kills Ma Gnucci’s three sons and Gnucci starts a great revenge war against Frank Castle using both her connections within the NYPD and the Russian mafia. It is not known how faithful the production prepared for Disney+ will be to this story, but the theme is expected to progress on the axis of revenge.
The new Punisher special is planned to be released in 2026. With this project, Marvel continues to both preserve the dark atmosphere of the character and produce short-term but effective content exclusive to the Disney+ platform.
