The schedule for the highly anticipated next-generation MacBook Pro is being reshaped. The Apple M5 MacBook Pro, previously expected to launch later this year, has reportedly been postponed to spring 2025 due to Apple’s strategy change. According to a recent report by Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, a reliable industry source, this delay could have a domino effect affecting not only the MacBook Pro but also Apple’s future product roadmap.
M5 MacBook Pro to Deliver Without OLED
One of the most significant consequences of this postponement will be its impact on the MacBook Pro model with the M6 chip and OLED display, which is expected to bring revolutionary innovations. The M5-powered model was expected to offer a more performance-oriented, incremental upgrade over the previous M4. The real leap forward was planned for a thinner and lighter design, a vibrant OLED display instead of mini-LED, and the M6 chip.
Analysts predicted the M6 model would be released in 2026. However, with the M5 model slated for spring 2025, Apple is rumored to be delaying the launch of its M6-powered OLED MacBook Pro by at least another year, to 2027, to avoid creating competition between the two powerful models.
Last October, Apple signaled that it would follow an annual refresh cycle by introducing MacBook Pros with M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max processors. However, the M5’s delay suggests the company is moving away from this tradition.
Meanwhile, Apple’s tradition of introducing its next-generation chips first in iPad Pro models may continue. Last year, the M4 chip debuted with the OLED iPad Pro, introduced in May, months before the MacBooks. If this trend continues, it’s still highly likely we’ll see the new iPad Pro with the M5 processor in October of this year.
According to Gurman’s report, Apple plans a very busy early 2025. Along with the delayed M5 MacBooks, tech enthusiasts will be in for a series of new products. Here are the devices likely to be introduced early next year:
- MacBook Pro models with M5 processors
- MacBook Air with M5 processors
- iPad Air with M4 processors
- New entry-level iPad with a faster processor
- The highly anticipated iPhone 17e
- A new external Mac monitor
While Apple hasn’t yet officially announced anything, these rumors suggest the company is making a significant revision to its product launch schedule.
