Microsoft has added a new recovery feature to the Windows 11 operating system. This mode, called Quick Machine Recovery (QMR), is activated when the system fails to boot normally and automatically puts the computer into recovery mode.
Windows 11 is adding an emergency recovery feature.
QMR allows the computer to boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This mode connects the system to Microsoft servers, downloads and applies the necessary repair files, and resolves common boot issues without user intervention.

The new feature was first announced by Microsoft last year. A major system crash in 2024 impacted the development process. This incident resulted in many users losing access to the operating system.
Microsoft decided to develop QMR to prepare for such situations. QMR’s primary function is to remotely obtain and apply updates or repair tools even if the system is not booting.
Quick Machine Recovery is currently only available to Insiders in the Windows 11 Canary channel. The feature is still in testing. However, it is expected to be available to all Windows 11 users after the tests are completed. QMR’s deployment, which addresses system startup errors and crashes, allows the system to return to working order without the need for manual intervention.
Quick Machine Recovery is a notable innovation in Windows 11’s security and stability features. In the event of system-related failures or unexpected crashes, it preserves user data and makes the operating system accessible again.
While currently available only to a limited number of users, the resilience and recovery capabilities of Windows 11 will be significantly enhanced with the wider availability of QMR in future versions.
