OpenAI is now turning to various cloud providers, including Google Cloud, for its ChatGPT infrastructure. According to the company’s official statement, this step was taken in response to the growing need for processing power and marks the beginning of a transition to a multi-vendor model for cloud infrastructure.

ChatGPT is starting to use Google Cloud

Until now, OpenAI has primarily used Microsoft’s Azure platform. However, due to the rapid growth of user demand for ChatGPT and its API services, the exponential increase in processing power requirements for large language models, and the graphics processor shortage, the company has decided to turn to alternative infrastructure sources. In the upcoming period, OpenAI will also utilize infrastructure from CoreWeave, Oracle, and Google Cloud.

Google Cloud’s contribution in this process allows the company to gain a significant position in the cloud market, where it has been overshadowed by competitors such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. Google is also currently collaborating with Anthropic, a rival AI company founded by some engineers who left OpenAI. It is stated that the infrastructure OpenAI will deploy on Google Cloud will be active in countries such as the US, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, and the UK.

This development marks a new phase in the relationship between OpenAI and Microsoft. Microsoft remains one of OpenAI’s largest investors and holds exclusive rights to the APIs.

However, the technical partnership between the parties is no longer a one-way structure. In an agreement signed in January, Microsoft agreed to give OpenAI priority bidding when needed. In return, OpenAI gained the flexibility to collaborate with different suppliers.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in April that the company was experiencing significant GPU supply difficulties. Shortly after this announcement, OpenAI signed a five-year, approximately $12 billion cloud capacity agreement with CoreWeave in March. Last year, as part of a technical collaboration between Oracle, Microsoft, and OpenAI, Azure services were integrated into Oracle’s infrastructure.

With this latest development, OpenAI is transitioning to a more flexible, distributed and secure infrastructure structure on a global scale, while effectively breaking Microsoft’s monopoly in the cloud space.
