Niantic has confirmed a major update for Pokémon Go, with the game’s leveling system getting its biggest change since launch. Starting October 15, the level cap will be raised from 50 all the way to 80, alongside new rewards, research tasks, and cosmetics aimed at making progression more exciting.
Pokémon Go level cap increase and progression changes

When the update rolls out, players’ new levels will be determined by their total XP to date nobody will lose progress. Here are the major changes coming in October:
- Level cap increases from 50 to 80
- Level-Up Research tasks for levels 41–50 removed
- New Level-Up Research tasks for levels 71–80
- Level 70+ players get higher chances of becoming Lucky Friends
- New rewards include larger Pokémon, items, and gift storage
- Avatar cosmetics are unlockable from level 25 onward
Players who skip ahead in levels after recalculation will also earn the rewards tied to their new milestones.
Limited-time rewards before the overhaul
From now until October 14, Niantic is running bonus events to help players climb the ranks before the reset:
- 2× Catch XP from Nice, Great, and Excellent throws
- +3,000 XP from winning raids
- +3,000 XP from winning Max Battles
- Timed Research quests offering up to 7 million XP
Additionally, one of the tougher Research tasks, repeatedly exploring 25km in a week, has been adjusted to only require two completions instead of eight.
Cosmetics tied to the old system
Players who hit levels 40–50 before October 14 can still earn exclusive cosmetics, including a Level 50 Jacket and a new avatar pose. Once the overhaul launches, these items will no longer be available.
A new era for Pokémon Go progression
This overhaul arrives as the Delightful Days season wraps up, which featured Dynamax and Shadow debuts like Butterfree and Kyogre. With a higher level cap and fresh incentives, Pokémon Go’s October update looks to re-energize both veterans and newcomers chasing their next milestone.
