It was recently reported that WhatsApp was working on AI-powered features. In a quick announcement today, WhatsApp announced the AI-powered “Writing Assistance” feature. This privacy-focused feature keeps messages completely private and offers suggestions in various styles (such as professional, funny, or supportive). Here are the details.
How does WhatsApp Writing Assistance work?
WhatsApp states that this feature uses “Private Processing” technology, which ensures that Meta or WhatsApp never reads your messages or suggested texts. The company has partnered with independent security firms such as NCC Group and Trail of Bits to verify the reliability of this technology.

WhatsApp emphasizes that Private Processing features like Writing Assistance and Message Summaries are optional and off by default, ensuring users are always in control of their experience.
Writing Assistance offers at least three alternative expressions from five different tones for users to choose from:
- Rephrase: Increases clarity and fluency without altering the meaning.
- Professional: Adjusts the language for more formal conversations.
- Funny: Adds a lighter or more humorous touch to the message.
- Supportive: Lightens the tone and aims to be uplifting.
- Proofread: Corrects spelling and grammar errors.
To use Writing Assistance, start typing in a one-on-one or group chat and tap the pencil icon that appears. The AI will offer suggestions tailored to the context of your message. Currently available only in English and some countries, especially the US, the feature will be rolled out to other languages and countries later this year.
