Instagram has finally delivered a proper iPad app, and it’s clearly gunning for TikTok. The new tablet-optimized experience, now live globally, puts Reels right at the center of the interface in a direct move to boost short-form video engagement.
Instagram’s iPad app fix puts Reels first

For years, iPad users were stuck using a blown-up iPhone version of Instagram, complete with fuzzy visuals and stripped-down functionality. That ends now. The redesigned app opens directly to a Reels feed, emphasizing what Instagram calls “lean-back entertainment.”
Stories remain pinned up top, while a single tap brings up the messaging tab. Meta’s priority is clear: short-form video is no longer just a feature, it’s the main attraction.
Instagram’s Reels-first layout mirrors TikTok’s approach
Instagram says Reels now account for over 20% of time spent in the app. With TikTok continuing to dominate in tablet usage, the decision to lead with Reels on iPad isn’t subtle. It’s an open challenge.
But the app doesn’t stop at video. A new Following tab includes:
- Chronological feed viewing
- Content from mutual followers
- Personalized recommendations
Users can even reorder feed priorities, tailoring what they see first.
Multitasking and messaging improve on the big screen
The app’s layout embraces iPadOS features fully. Users can now:
- View messages and notifications side by side
- Expand comment sections without pausing videos
- Multitask with system-level split views
It’s a clean, functional upgrade that finally makes Instagram feel native on larger screens.
Android tablet version coming soon
Instagram’s iPad app is free to download now for devices running iPadOS 15.1 or later. An Android tablet version is in the works, according to the company.
With this release, Meta isn’t just fixing an oversight; it’s making a statement. Reels is no longer just part of Instagram. On tablets, it is Instagram.
