If you’re a longtime fan of Final Fantasy Tactics, this is your moment. Square Enix just cracked the door open for a potential sequel to the genre-defining strategy RPG, but only if Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles performs well at launch.
The Ivalice Chronicles could determine the series’ future

In a recent interview with Inverse, director Kazutoyo Maehiro made it clear: if The Ivalice Chronicles finds commercial success, it won’t just justify the remaster, it could revive the whole Tactics brand. That includes sequels, spin-offs, and long-overdue remasters of titles like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and A2: Grimoire of the Rift.
“If The Ivalice Chronicles can do well… it shows the business viability of the strategy RPG genre,” Maehiro explained. “That could potentially open the door for something with Advance, A2, or maybe even sequels and new titles as well.”
The FFT team wants to return and Matsuno’s back
One of the most exciting details here? The Ivalice Chronicles isn’t just a remaster, it’s a reunion. Yasumi Matsuno, the mastermind behind Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Final Fantasy XII, is contributing once again, after being absent from the earlier War of the Lions remaster. That alone is enough to fire up fans who’ve been waiting for the series to return to its roots.
Maehiro, who worked on the original FFT and now directs The Ivalice Chronicles, sounds equally eager:
“I think I speak for everyone who’s worked on the original Final Fantasy Tactics we’d really like to see that happen.”
What could come next if Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles sells well?
Square Enix hasn’t revealed a roadmap, but Maehiro’s comments suggest these are very real possibilities:
- A true Final Fantasy Tactics sequel, continuing the original storyline or exploring a new corner of Ivalice
- Remasters of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and A2: Grimoire of the Rift
- New entries using the same isometric tactical system
- A bigger push for the strategy RPG genre under the Final Fantasy brand
Final Fantasy Tactics 2 depends on the fans
The message is crystal clear: Square Enix is watching how The Ivalice Chronicles performs. That means if fans want a sequel, they’ll have to show up and buy in.
It’s been over 15 years since we last saw a new Tactics game worth talking about. With the original team partially reunited and the genre seeing renewed interest, there might not be a better shot than this.
