Sony’s next-generation console, the PlayStation 6, is preparing to offer users a removable disc drive. With this new model, consumers will have the flexibility to purchase the disc drive separately or as a bundle. This move is seen as part of Sony’s strategy to reduce production and logistics costs.
PlayStation 6 to Offer Removable Disc Drives
The concept of a removable disc drive was first introduced in the mid-generation PlayStation 5 models. Initially, two different PS5 models were released: one with a built-in disc drive and one with an all-digital disc drive.

However, users who purchased the digital version did not have the option to add a disc drive later. This changed with the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro models, and Sony achieved significant financial success by selling the disc drive as a separate accessory. This success is expected to continue with the PlayStation 6.
Consumers will be able to purchase the all-digital version of the PS6 and add a disc drive later if needed. Or, they can opt for the disc drive bundle directly. Meanwhile, Sony is expected to release a slimmer PlayStation 5 model later this month, featuring an 825GB hard drive instead of the standard 1TB.
This strategy maintains the balance between physical and digital copies in the gaming world. Sony is supporting the growth of the purely digital gaming market while also keeping in mind the players who want to own a physical game collection.
This gives gamers freedom of choice, allowing the company to leverage the advantages of both markets. This move also provides a more affordable console option for digital gamers who don’t need a disc drive.
