Leaks have been surfacing for a long time about Qualcomm’s upcoming new flagship processor, and now it’s officially confirmed. Rumors that Qualcomm would change the name of its next flagship chipset have been confirmed. The company announced that it will call its new chip the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Here are the details.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is coming
Qualcomm argues that this change is a more logical step in its branding strategy. According to the company’s statement, “Since we adopted a new single-digit naming system and visual identity, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 represents the fifth generation of the Snapdragon 8 series flagship mobile platform. By using the ‘fifth generation’ designation, we are reinforcing the platform’s leadership and making it easier for consumers to understand our product roadmap.”

This naming theory seems quite consistent. The previous four flagship chips were named Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, 8 Gen 2, 8 Gen 3, and 8 Elite (what Qualcomm now considers the fourth-generation chip), respectively.
On the technical side, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is expected to feature Qualcomm’s second-generation custom Oryon CPU cores. These cores include two main cores clocked at 4.61 GHz and six performance cores clocked at 3.63 GHz. On the graphics side, it will be paired with an Adreno 840 GPU clocked at 1.2 GHz.
The chipset reportedly scored between 4.20 and 4.40 million in the AnTuTu v11 benchmark. Qualcomm will officially unveil the new chipset at the Snapdragon Summit on September 22nd.
Xiaomi is wasting no time in using this new chip. Immediately following Qualcomm’s announcement, the company confirmed that it will launch its new flagship phones with this chip later this month. The devices are also claimed to be a sign of Xiaomi’s product lineup shift, from the Xiaomi 16 series to the Xiaomi 17 series.
