Mad Max: The Wasteland, a project originally planned to be part of George Miller’s long-running Mad Max universe but shelved due to Fury Road’s box office performance, is now being developed into an HBO Max series.
Mad Max: The Wasteland is coming soon
Previously announced as a feature film, the story centered on a narrative set before Fury Road. The project was to feature a new adventure for Max. However, when Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga failed to meet expectations at the box office, Warner Bros. put the project on hold.

Mad Max: The Wasteland was originally conceived as a series. This project, which George Miller has been working on since the 1980s, evolved into various formats over the years. The idea, which failed to launch as a series, eventually evolved into a video game and then a book. With the cancellation of the film version, the project is returning to television, achieving its original planned structure.
According to information shared on the Mad Max Bible podcast, HBO has begun preparations for the series. The script has been handed over to Shaun Grant. Grant has previously worked on productions such as True History of the Kelly Gang and Nitram. Beyond the established creative team for the series, a definitive production schedule has not yet been announced.
Tom Hardy was set to play Max, the lead character in the film version. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether Hardy will be involved in this series. The actor, who most recently starred in MobLand, is no stranger to television production. Therefore, a role in The Wasteland, a series being developed for HBO Max, is also being considered a possibility.
What new features does it offer?
Following the failure of Furiosa, the uncertainty surrounding new projects in the Mad Max universe was disappointing among fans. With HBO Max’s move, it’s now certain that at least one more story from the universe will be brought to the big screen.
The new series will reportedly uncover untold details about Max’s past. No official announcements have yet been made regarding the project’s cast, release date, or filming schedule.
