HMD Global, which maintains the Nokia brand’s presence in the global mobile market, announced the renewal of its brand license agreement with Nokia. Initially expected to expire in 2026, the agreement has been extended for an additional two to three years with the new arrangement. This strategic move secures the future of the Nokia brand, particularly in markets where push-button phones remain popular.
Nokia Extends HMD Partnership
HMD Global, the exclusive licensee of Nokia-branded mobile devices since 2016, has revived iconic classic models and introduced next-generation smartphones and push-button phones to consumers through this partnership. While the extension of the agreement has not been officially confirmed by either company, sources close to the industry are reporting it as a confirmed development.

The primary driver behind this decision is the unwavering position of push-button phones in major markets like India and China. India, in particular, holds the title of the world’s largest push-button phone market. Market research firm IDC’s 2024 data supports this. According to data, HMD Global maintains its leadership in the touch-tone phone segment, controlling over 22% of the market in terms of number of devices sold and approximately 31% in terms of value.
This agreement will allow HMD Global to maintain its strong market position and continue to capitalize on existing demand. Thus, at a time when the technology world is rapidly evolving towards smartphones, classic Nokia-branded phones will continue to hold their place on shelves for some time to come.
