OpenAI device still in development limbo
A new report from the Financial Times suggests the upcoming OpenAI device may not launch on time. Initially expected in 2026, the AI-first hardware reportedly faces delays due to lingering technical challenges, especially around how the assistant should behave and protect user privacy.
The concept behind the product is ambitious: a pocketable, display-free AI companion that’s always aware, yet never invasive. But pulling that off in practice? That’s proving harder than expected.

Personality proving harder to design than hardware
According to sources briefed on the project, one major roadblock is deciding what kind of “personality” the assistant should have. The team wants the AI to feel like a helpful friend, but not cross into uncanny or awkward territory.
One source close to the project described the goal as building “a friend who’s a computer who isn’t your weird AI girlfriend.” That balance between approachability and function is still being figured out.
Privacy and cost remain key concerns
Designing an always-on AI assistant brings obvious privacy concerns. While the OpenAI device aims to be proactive and environment-aware, developers haven’t fully worked out how it will avoid overstepping user boundaries.
Cost is another challenge. With high-performance AI workloads running locally, the device will need serious processing power. That could drive up manufacturing expenses, potentially putting pressure on the final retail price.

Details are still scarce, but Sam Altman has hinted at a few early concepts. The device might be:
