Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler shared critical information regarding the procurement of new fighter jets in his speech to the Turkish Grand National Assembly Budget Committee. Minister Güler provided the latest status on the Turkish Eurofighter procurement process. While Germany’s obstacles persist, it has emerged that Turkey is negotiating with Qatar to purchase 24 second-hand aircraft.
Turkey Seeks Alternatives for Eurofighter Procurement
Turkey’s primary preference was brand-new Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. However, consortium member Germany’s political obstruction of the sale has led Ankara to explore new alternatives. Therefore, Turkey appears to have shifted its search to a different route. Minister Güler noted that the UK and Spain are continuing their efforts to persuade Germany.

Amid these efforts, Minister Güler also announced a new development. He announced that Qatar is divesting its Eurofighter fleet due to its purchase of Rafale fighter jets from France. Accordingly, Turkey has reportedly entered into a bid for the 24 Tranche 3 model aircraft Qatar plans to sell.
Ankara’s move is also being interpreted as a strategy to increase pressure on Germany. Minister Güler stated, “We are negotiating to resolve the German issue and acquire the 24 aircraft sold by Qatar.” This process clearly demonstrates Turkey’s commitment to modernizing its air force.
