A new feature being developed for the Google Maps Android app has surfaced. A “power saving mode” is coming soon to the app. This mode will operate completely independently of phones’ general battery saving settings. The feature hasn’t been officially announced yet and is currently only available in beta testing.
Google Maps Reduces Battery Usage
Power saving mode reduces battery consumption during navigation, providing a more efficient experience for users on long journeys. The most striking aspect of the mode is how it’s activated. Users press the phone’s power button to activate this new mode. Google aims to reduce battery consumption by simplifying map details without completely dimming the screen.

When this mode is activated, the Google Maps interface takes on an almost entirely black-and-white appearance. In this simplified navigation screen, users only see basic information such as a direction arrow, estimated time of arrival (ETA), remaining time, and distance.
Street names, traffic details, and all other visual elements are disabled in this mode. However, the app continues to support voice prompts. The new mode provides support for walking, vehicle, and motorcycle directions.
This power-saving mode, currently in beta, has not yet been confirmed. It’s unclear whether it will be added to the stable version of the app in the coming weeks. Google may make changes to the interface or functionality based on user feedback. The company has not officially announced this new feature.
