Hideo Kojima, one of the respected figures in the gaming world, recently drew considerable criticism from Turkish players, particularly with a post he made on X. Kojima signed a copy of the book “Kobane Calling” by Zerocalcare, a PKK sympathizer and cartoonist whose social media accounts have been banned in Turkey, and shared it on X.
Following the post by Zerocalcare, a PKK supporter, Turkish players in particular criticized Kojima. After a flurry of comments and shares, Kojima deleted the post today and backtracked. However, Japanese journalist Ishii Takaaki posted a statement suggesting that Kojima could be arrested.
Could Hideo Kojima really be arrested?
Ishii Takaaki said, “This person, whose Japanese name is Kojima Hideo, is publishing a manga about a Kurdish terrorist organization, and I think this is dangerous. It may be the normal ignorance of the Japanese people, but he could be arrested for engaging in a political struggle in Turkey, the Middle East, or Central Asia.”
Kojima’s fate remains unknown. Kojima, who introduced Turkish language support in the first Death Stranding game, removed it in the second. This incident may indicate that Turkish gamers no longer view Kojima favorably.
So, what are your thoughts on this? Did Kojima make this post without knowing the political situation, or was it just a reaction? Let’s discuss it in the comments.
