Huawei is joining the recently popular ultra-thin phone trend with a radically different approach than Apple’s iPhone Air. With the upcoming Mate 70 Air, the company is rebalancing the “Air” concept by prioritizing battery life and camera performance over extreme thinness. The first user photos are already circulating online, and pre-orders are reportedly open in China.
Huawei Mate 70 Air draws attention with its design
A first-look image leaked on Weibo shows that the Mate 70 Air’s design shares similarities with the Mate 70 Pro series. The smoothly curved corners and slightly curved mid-frame appear to provide a more ergonomic and comfortable grip compared to rivals like the Galaxy S25 Edge. While the display in the image is unclear, previous leaks suggested this model would feature a “micro-quad-curved” glass design, and these details appear consistent with the leaked photo.

In the race for thinness, the Mate 70 Air focuses on battery life rather than direct competition. According to the leaked specifications:
- Massive Battery: The Mate 70 Air is expected to come with a massive 6,500 mAh battery, more than double the capacity of the iPhone Air (3,149 mAh). This capacity promises a long-lasting, uninterrupted experience for users.
- Charging Speed: Wired charging is expected to be limited to 66W USB-C.
The Mate 70 Air’s camera setup also appears to be significantly more advanced than other slim-focused phones. According to leaks and live photos, the device will feature a triple rear camera system:
- Main Camera: 50 MP
- Ultra-Wide: 13 MP
- Periscope Telephoto: 8 MP
A multispectral sensor is also expected to aid in more accurate color reproduction in photos and videos. This setup makes the Mate 70 Air a much more capable “Air” model in terms of photography.
The Huawei Mate 70 Air is expected to be officially unveiled on Thursday, November 6th. However, as with the company’s recent launches, this model is expected to remain exclusive to the Chinese market for now, with no plans for an international release.
If these specifications are confirmed, the Mate 70 Air will stand out as a more balanced “Air” concept, offering significant battery life and versatile camera capabilities at the expense of an ultra-thin design.
