Blizzard has officially announced the anticipated WoW Hearthsteel currency. The company officially confirmed that it will add a new virtual currency to World of Warcraft. This decision, announced ahead of the Midnight expansion, sparked a significant debate within the game’s user base, which currently has a $15 monthly subscription fee. Players are concerned that the new currency will become a microtransaction trap.
What will the WoW Hearthsteel currency be used for?
In a statement, Blizzard stated that the new virtual currency will allow players to purchase multiple items simultaneously and offer financial protection for both parties involved. For example, you might want to buy a full set of chairs around a dining table or multiple table settings for invited guests. It also added that it will make the process of obtaining inexpensive items, such as a large number of candles, more efficient. Therefore, Hearthsteel will be used primarily for housing-focused items.

Players will be able to purchase Hearthsteel with their Battle.net balance. However, it’s also possible to acquire the new virtual currency using in-game gold through WoW Tokens (WoW tokens). The company also announced that it would keep the catalog of items sold through Hearthsteel small compared to the items earned through gameplay. Blizzard attempted to reassure players by stating that housing items tied to a player’s race or class’s core fantasies, or decor already present in Azeroth, would not be sold in the shop.
The Hearthsteel currency was first revealed by data miners. After Blizzard confirmed this information, players began voicing their concerns. One WoW Reddit user commented, “This isn’t just about the currency. For years, a large portion of the player base has been crying out that we don’t want the game going in this direction, and here it is.” Microsoft’s 30% profit margin target for its gaming division is also believed to have played a role in this decision.
