Borderlands 4 players can now download the game’s first post-launch DLC for free. After weeks of performance complaints and growing backlash, 2K Games is offering Bounty Pack 1: How Rush Saved Mercenary Day at no cost. The surprise move arrives just as the studio shifts its roadmap heading into 2026.
Borderlands 4 DLC made free as 2K focuses on fixes
2K confirmed the decision in its latest press update. The company pointed to ongoing technical issues that forced the team to cut back content in Bounty Pack 1. Rather than delay the DLC, 2K chose to release it as a freebie to all players.
The November 20 update automatically unlocks the pack no extra steps required.

What’s in Borderlands 4’s Bounty Pack 1?
The DLC follows Rush, leader of the Outbounders, as he takes on Minister Screw in a holiday-themed questline. The story dives into Rush’s childhood memories and adds festive flair to the action. Players will also receive:
- A Vault Card with 24 unlockable cosmetics
- Legendary gear with reroll options
- Secret collectibles scattered across the map
While smaller than typical expansions, the content offers some extra holiday fun as 2K works on stability.
Premium buyers still get full content with Bounty Pack 5
Some fans wondered if Deluxe or Super Deluxe owners would lose value after Pack 1 went free. 2K addressed that directly. Those who purchased Borderlands 4 bundles will still get all four promised premium DLCs.
To balance the change, 2K will release an extra Bounty Pack 5 in 2026 at no cost. This ensures all buyers get what they paid for and then some.
Players can expect more endgame content soon
The updates won’t stop there. In December, players will face Bloomreaper, the first “Invincible”-tier raid boss in Borderlands 4. Gearbox is also working on a new Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode – Level 6, as well as a high-difficulty Takedown event planned for 2026.
Meanwhile, 2K has promised to roll out monthly updates and weekly patches to keep performance and balance in check.
