OpenAI has released a new update for its popular AI tool, ChatGPT, that significantly improves the user experience. Both the mobile app and web version of ChatGPT now integrate Voice Mode directly into the existing chat window. This practical innovation allows users to communicate with the AI by voice without having to switch to the separate screen where the blue sphere appears.
A new era in ChatGPT usage: Voice and text chat merged
This feature, previously hinted at in the app’s code reviews, is now officially available on all platforms. With the updated experience, ChatGPT Voice Mode instantly displays a live text transcript of the conversation on your chat screen while you’re talking. This allows users to follow along while speaking and texting. The AI can also display visual information like maps, weather, and more in real time within this stream without having to leave the chat window.
Similar to Google’s Gemini Live assistant, this mode allows you to interact with the AI hands-free. By taking pauses, tone of voice, and expressions into account, AI can engage you in a much more natural and seamless conversation. Currently, two different options are available: a standard version for all users and an Advanced Voice Mode for paid users.
For users who don’t want to abandon their old habits, the system also provides an option. Before the new in-chat experience, clicking the voice icon opened a completely separate interface. If you prefer this old method and interface, you can continue to conduct voice chats in a separate window by enabling the “Separate mode” option under the Voice Mode heading in the Settings menu.
So, what are your thoughts on this new integration? Do you prefer using voice assistants within the chat or on a separate screen?
