Volkswagen has largely lifted the veil of secrecy surrounding the ID.Cross, expected to be its most affordable electric SUV model. The new prototype, freed from heavy camouflage, has been clearly seen for the first time, revealing Volkswagen logos.

The German automaker’s optical illusion techniques, using silver and black bands on the front grille, headlights, and bumpers to conceal the vehicle’s electric identity, are insufficient to hide its main lines.

The prototype, which perfectly matches the lines of the concept model exhibited at the Munich Motor Show, proves that it has reached its production form. The vehicle’s upright nose, short front and rear overhangs, and blunt rear design reflect all the details of the concept model.

Sharing its technical infrastructure with the next-generation electric ID.Polo, the ID.Cross is built on the MEB platform. Introduced in the concept phase with a 208 horsepower front-engine, it has been confirmed that the vehicle will also have the 114 horsepower and 133 horsepower engine options approved for the Polo model.

While Volkswagen hasn’t yet officially announced battery capacities, the vehicle’s 420-kilometer range suggests a 52 kWh battery pack. Whether a smaller 37 kWh battery option, more geared towards city driving, will be offered in this SUV model remains unclear. Volkswagen is also considering the possibility of producing an ID.Cross GTI version using the 223 hp engine planned for the Polo in the future.

Inside, drivers are greeted by a technology-focused cockpit. An 11-inch freestanding digital instrument panel is located just behind the steering wheel, complemented by a massive 13-inch multimedia screen in the center of the console.

This system, integrated with an AI assistant with ChatGPT support, is among the vehicle’s most notable features. Scheduled to launch in 2026, the ID.Cross is positioned as Volkswagen’s most accessible SUV alternative in the electric vehicle segment.
