The world of Formula 1 is undergoing a major transformation in its terminology, along with radical technical rule changes that will come into effect in 2026. New concepts added to the sport’s traditional jargon focus particularly on strategic modes that will replace the long-standing DRS system. From next season onwards, viewers and teams will begin using new terms such as “Straight Mode,” “Corner Mode,” and “Overtake Mode” instead of “DRS.”
Formula 1 terminology is changing
The 2026 Formula 1 cars are designed to be narrower and lighter than current machines. The minimum weight of the car is reduced by 30 kilograms to 724 kilograms, while the wheelbase is shortened by 200 mm to 3,400 mm.
On the aerodynamic side, a first in the sport’s history is being achieved. The movable rear wing structure of the current DRS system is evolving into an active aerodynamic system where both the front and rear wings can move simultaneously.

In the new system called “Straight Mode,” the front and rear wings are lowered to reduce drag on the straights. Unlike the current DRS system, this mode can be used by all drivers on designated straights, regardless of their proximity to the car in front.
In corners, “Corner Mode” is activated, raising the wings to increase downforce. According to FIA data, in line with the requirements of the new power units, the total downforce of the cars is reduced by 30 percent, while drag is reduced by 55 percent.
To facilitate overtaking, the power of the hybrid system is emphasized. “Overtake Mode” allows the driver within one second of the car in front to use 350 kW of electric power at full capacity up to a speed of 337 km/h. When this mode is not activated, the electric motor gradually cuts power after 290 km/h.
Drivers also have access to “Boost” mode, which provides short bursts of maximum power for attacking or defending. FIA Singles Director Nicholas Tombazis states that the goal of facilitating car following, which began in 2022, will reach its peak with these rules, and the performance loss in following distance will be reduced to its lowest level in history. The new era, with the participation of manufacturers such as Audi and Cadillac, will start in Australia in March 2026.
