Renault has achieved a groundbreaking new milestone in electric vehicle range, shaking up the industry. The brand’s ultra-efficient concept car, named ‘Filante’, has opened a new chapter in electric vehicle technology by traveling over 1,000 kilometers on a single charge. This development is seen as a giant step towards eliminating range anxiety.
How Did Renault Achieve Such High Range in Electric Vehicles?
This special concept car, named Filante, achieved an incredible result in a test conducted in Morocco. At a realistic highway speed of 102 km/h, the vehicle traveled a full 1,008 kilometers. Moreover, at the end of this record-breaking drive, the battery still had 11% energy reserve. This indicates that the vehicle’s total potential range could be over 1,100 kilometers.
One of the biggest secrets behind this success is the vehicle’s extraordinary efficiency. During the test, Filante consumed only 7.8 kWh of energy per 100 kilometers. This value is significantly below the consumption figures of today’s most efficient mass-produced electric vehicles (such as the Tesla Model 3 and Lucid Air), which are around 11-12 kWh/100 km. Therefore, the vehicle sets a new standard in terms of range.
So, how did Renault achieve this incredible efficiency? The answer lies in a series of engineering marvels. First and foremost, the vehicle’s design is extremely aerodynamic. This structure, which minimizes air resistance, allows it to travel further with less energy. Furthermore, the fact that the vehicle weighs only 1,000 kg is also a significant factor.
The vehicle uses an 87 kWh battery. Considering that the mass-produced Renault Scenic E-Tech model with the same battery has a range of approximately 610 km, the efficiency gains of the Filante concept become even clearer. In addition, very narrow tires specially developed by Michelin, and cutting-edge systems such as steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire minimize rolling resistance, contributing to the range.
Renault describes the Filante as a “walking laboratory.” The main goal is to discover ways to maximize the range of electric vehicles and transfer the knowledge gained to future mass-production models. This work is a sign that we may see much longer-range electric cars in the near future.
