The recent RAM supply shortage in the technology world is threatening not only the PC market but also the future of game consoles. According to an Insider Gaming report shared by reliable leak source Tom Henderson, the industry-wide RAM stock problems and exorbitant price increases have put Sony and Microsoft in a difficult position. This crisis, deepened by manufacturers prioritizing AI data centers, could disrupt the release schedule of next-generation consoles.
2027 and 2028 targets are in jeopardy.
According to information from the industry, both Sony and Microsoft are seriously considering postponing the release dates of the PlayStation 6 and the next-generation Xbox consoles. Previously planned launches for 2027 or 2028 may be pushed beyond these dates due to current RAM costs. The companies’ core strategy is based on waiting for RAM manufacturers to expand their infrastructure and for prices to fall to reasonable levels. Otherwise, a rushed launch could make costs unsustainable.

The biggest advantage of game consoles has been their ability to offer powerful hardware at a more affordable price compared to PCs. Companies that typically subsidize hardware costs are now cornered by record increases in RAM prices. If the consoles launch on schedule, the costs will inevitably be passed on to consumers, and prices will reach exorbitant levels. This could mean the end of the consoles’ promise of affordable gaming.
The main source of the crisis is attributed to RAM manufacturers shifting their capacity to rapidly growing AI data centers. Giants like Micron focusing on enterprise AI hardware rather than consumer products has triggered a market contraction. For Sony and Microsoft, already struggling with rising console prices and tariffs, this new cost item could make it impossible to produce new devices targeting 4K 120 FPS.
So, do you think Sony and Microsoft should release high-priced consoles or wait for prices to drop? Share your thoughts in the comments!
