The latest GDC 2026 game report from the Game Developers Conference has unveiled the current trends and anxieties shaping the industry’s future. Based on a survey of over 2,300 professionals, the report highlights critical issues ranging from widespread layoffs and the controversial rise of artificial intelligence to shifts in game engine popularity and growing demands for unionization.
Key Findings from the GDC 2026 Game Report
One of the most alarming findings in the report is the significant impact of layoffs across the gaming sector. The survey revealed that 28% of professionals have been laid off within the last two years, with this figure climbing to 33% in the United States. Furthermore, half of the respondents stated that their current or most recent company conducted layoffs in the past 12 months. This instability has created considerable concern, particularly among students, 74% of whom expressed anxiety about their future job prospects in the industry.
In addition to workforce challenges, the report also noted major shifts in developer preferences for platforms and game engines. Unreal Engine has now become the most popular game engine with a 42% usage rate, surpassing Unity, which stands at 30%. While Unreal Engine’s dominance is growing, especially in AAA studios, Unity continues to be a favorite among independent developers. PC remains the leading platform for development, but Valve’s portable console, the Steam Deck, is also showing a remarkable increase in popularity.
AI Debates and Unionization Demands Escalate
Generative artificial intelligence remains one of the most heated topics in the industry. According to the report, 36% of professionals are already using AI tools in their work. However, there are significant ethical and practical concerns about its impact. A striking 52% of participants believe generative AI will have a negative effect on the gaming industry. This represents a notable increase from the previous year and reflects the worries of employees in fields like visual arts, game design, and programming.
Another critical issue highlighted is the growing demand for unionization among employees. Support for unionizing is particularly strong among US-based respondents, reaching an overwhelming 82%. Overall, 62% of all participants expressed interest in joining a union. These figures clearly indicate a rising call for improved working conditions and greater job security within the sector.
