Xodus Project Brings Xbox Game Pass to Linux and Mac

The Heroic Game Launcher team is currently developing an ambitious open-source project called Xodus, which aims to bring Xbox and PC Game Pass compatibility to Linux and macOS environments. While Microsoft’s subscription services are currently restricted to the Windows ecosystem, this initiative seeks to bridge the gap by allowing users to authenticate their accounts and install titles directly without relying on a Windows installation. By enabling cross-platform access to the vast Game Pass library, the developers hope to provide a seamless gaming experience for users on non-Windows systems, marking a significant milestone for open-source gaming software.
- The Xodus project allows users to authenticate Xbox accounts on Linux and macOS platforms.
- Developers are currently engineering compatibility for modern GDK and MSIXVC file formats.
- The software utilizes existing compatibility layers like Wine, DXVK, and VKD3D-Proton to run titles.
- Older UWP-based games like Forza Horizon 3 will remain incompatible with the new launcher.
The Development Team Enables Access to Game Pass Libraries
The core objective of the Xodus project is to remove the forced dependency on the Windows operating system for subscribers. The development team has already successfully implemented the necessary infrastructure for Xbox login procedures and game license verification.
This development could fundamentally change how Linux-based handhelds like the Steam Deck interact with subscription-based gaming services.
Despite these successes, the project faces technical hurdles regarding the execution of modern game files. The team is aggressively working on reverse-engineering Microsoft’s GDK and MSIXVC formats to ensure that current titles can function properly outside of their native environment. However, the developers have clarified that not every title will be supported. Specifically, legacy UWP games from the earlier Windows 8 and Windows 10 eras will not be accessible through this launcher, effectively excluding older titles from the library.
Technical Requirements Shape the Future of Cross-Platform Play
To ensure that supported games run smoothly, the Xodus launcher relies on established compatibility layers. On Linux systems, this involves integrating tools such as Wine, DXVK, and VKD3D-Proton, which translate Windows API calls into formats that Linux kernels can understand. Support for macOS is currently in its infancy, with the team prioritizing Linux stability before expanding the feature set for Apple’s hardware ecosystem.
The completion of this project will likely expand the total addressable market for the PC Game Pass service significantly.
While the project shows immense promise, the team has not yet released an official roadmap or a definitive timeline for the public launch. As the development continues, the community remains optimistic about the prospect of playing high-end titles on open-source platforms without sacrificing performance. The success of this endeavor depends heavily on the team’s ability to maintain compatibility as Microsoft updates its proprietary gaming frameworks.
We are curious to hear your thoughts on this development; do you believe that native support for Linux and Mac would lead to a significant increase in the total number of Game Pass subscribers globally?
