Turkish National Helicopter T625 GÖKBEY Joins Police Inventory
The Turkish General Directorate of Security has officially integrated the T625 GÖKBEY, Turkey’s first indigenous multi-role helicopter, into its operational fleet. Police Forces Expect 18 New GÖKBEY Platforms
Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi confirmed that the security forces are scheduled to receive a total of 18 T625 GÖKBEY helicopters under the current procurement program. As the first unit enters service, subsequent deliveries are expected to follow, significantly enhancing the operational capacity of the aviation department. The aircraft is specifically engineered for multi-purpose roles, including surveillance, public order maintenance, and disaster management. Currently, the police aviation fleet consists of 35 helicopters, 5 fixed-wing aircraft, and 20 unmanned aerial vehicles, all of which will be further strengthened by this new indigenous asset.
Personnel Training Continues at TUSAŞ Facilities
The integration of the T625 GÖKBEY into the security apparatus involves comprehensive training for the personnel who will operate and maintain the aircraft. Currently, six police pilots and four specialized technicians are undergoing an intensive adaptation program at the TUSAŞ training center. This ensures that the transition to the new, advanced avionics architecture of the GÖKBEY is seamless, allowing for immediate operational deployment once the remaining units are delivered.
Indigenous Engineering Defines the 6-Ton Class
The T625 GÖKBEY stands out as a six-ton class, twin-engine general-purpose helicopter. Developed through years of rigorous testing, including over 3,000 hours of flight evaluations, the platform features state-of-the-art flight control systems and a modular design. Since its maiden flight on September 6, 2018, the project has evolved into a versatile platform suitable for various government institutions. Officials anticipate that the platform will eventually serve the Ministry of Health and other civil entities in addition to internal security forces.
Defense Industry Projects Generate Significant Economic Value
Presidency of Defense Industries President Haluk Görgün highlighted that the GÖKBEY project reflects the collective success of over 200 domestic suppliers. By replacing imported alternatives, the national helicopter initiative has reportedly prevented over 8 billion dollars in direct foreign expenditures. When factoring in long-term maintenance and logistics costs, the total economic impact exceeds 35 billion dollars. To date, Turkey has successfully delivered 39 T70s, 8 GÖKBEYs, and 80 ATAK helicopters to various users, further establishing its footprint in the global aerospace market.
