Smart #2 Debuts as the Modern Successor to Fortwo

Smart introduces the #2, a compact electric city car successor to the Fortwo, featuring 290km range and advanced tech at the 2026 Paris Motor Show.

Smart has officially unveiled the Smart #2 at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, marking the highly anticipated return of a compact two-seater city car to the brand’s lineup. Serving as the direct spiritual successor to the iconic Fortwo, which concluded production in 2024, this new model arrives three decades after the original Smart vehicle changed urban mobility forever. Based on the production-ready design of the Concept #2 shown earlier this year, the Smart #2 integrates modern electric technology with the brand’s signature agility, aiming to dominate crowded metropolitan environments with its refined, ultra-compact architecture.

    • The Smart #2 measures 2,746 mm in length and utilizes Geely’s Electric Compact Architecture platform.
    • The vehicle features a 35.8 kWh battery providing a maximum WLTP-rated range of 290 kilometers.
    • Safety and convenience are enhanced by the Tridion Cell Evo structure and advanced driver assistance systems.
    • Market release is expected to include Europe and China with an anticipated starting price of 17,900 pounds.

Dimensions Remain Compact for Urban Maneuverability

Despite its role as a modern replacement, the Smart #2 retains the spirit of its predecessor by staying exceptionally small. The vehicle measures 2,746 mm in length, which is only 51 mm longer than the final generation of the Fortwo. This slight increase ensures that the car remains one of the easiest vehicles to park in tight city spaces. Engineers have successfully maintained a 6.95-meter turning circle, ensuring the car remains highly agile in dense traffic.

The aesthetic design, overseen by Mercedes-Benz, blends contemporary styling with familiar Smart traits. The vehicle features a striking floating roof, sleek frameless windows, and a practical two-piece tailgate. Underneath, it utilizes the Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) platform developed by Geely, which provides a modern foundation for its electric drivetrain and improved safety standards.

Performance and Battery Efficiency Are Optimized

Powering the Smart #2 is a rear-mounted electric motor that generates 81 horsepower (60 kW) and 130 Nm of torque. This powertrain is paired with a 35.8 kWh LFP battery, which delivers an impressive 290 kilometers of range according to the WLTP cycle. This represents a significant improvement over the previous EQ Fortwo, which offered only 135 kilometers of range. The system supports 65 kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in approximately 20 minutes. Additionally, the vehicle includes V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capabilities, enabling owners to power external electrical devices.

    Interior Technology Offers High-End Features

Inside the cabin, the Smart #2 prioritizes a high-tech experience with a 10.1-inch central multimedia screen complemented by an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. The luggage capacity is rated at 305 liters, providing sufficient space for daily urban errands. The model is available in Pure, Pure+, and Premium trim levels. The top-tier Premium version includes premium amenities such as a panoramic glass roof, heated seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and a high-fidelity seven-speaker Sennheiser audio system. Furthermore, a limited-run Couture Edition, restricted to 999 units in Europe, features a distinctive matte white finish, gold roof accents, and exclusive 16-inch alloy wheels.

Given that the Smart #2 brings a significantly longer range and modern tech to the two-seater segment, do you believe there is still a strong demand for compact city cars in your local area, or are four-door electric vehicles a more practical choice for your daily needs?
