Reddit Login Requirement Is Coming as Google Search Traffic Falls

A Reddit login requirement is coming. CEO Steve Huffman told shareholders on October 29, 2026 that Reddit is shifting “to a logged-in-only experience,” with the first tests starting in select markets outside the U.S. in the fourth quarter. No date has been set for a global rollout.
The announcement came in Reddit’s Q3 2026 letter to shareholders, alongside a sharp warning about falling traffic from Google search.
When Will the Reddit Login Requirement Start?
Right now, most of Reddit can still be read without an account. That is set to change, but slowly. According to Huffman, Reddit will “begin fully testing” a logged-in-only version in select non-U.S. markets during Q4, and the results will shape “an optimized version of logged-in-only Reddit globally.”
Huffman told CNBC he could not give a specific timeline because the change involves a lot of complexity, and that Reddit is still deciding what logged-out visitors will be able to see. According to Ars Technica, some users have reported login prompts on desktop since at least August.
The move follows earlier restrictions. Old Reddit already requires a login, and Reddit has been testing prompts that push mobile web visitors into its app. Huffman said only about 13% of eligible mobile web users currently see that app prompt, so it “has room to scale.” The company also says it has improved incognito mode in its app.
Why Reddit Is Ending Logged-Out Browsing
Huffman gave four reasons in the letter. Logged-in users get more relevant content, Reddit gets “more signals for ads targeting,” it can “protect access to Reddit’s extremely valuable corpus of data,” and it can better adapt to new regulations around the world.
Data protection matters because Reddit licenses its posts and comments to AI companies. Its “other revenue” line, which includes data licensing, rose 35% to $48 million in Q3. OpenAI and Google are its two largest licensing partners, and Huffman told CNBC Reddit is still negotiating with Google over that deal.
“Pretty much all of the major ad-based platforms have gone through this transition. We are excited and moving quickly,” Huffman wrote. He told CNBC that Reddit is “the last platform to provide basically unfettered logged-out access,” and that he had personally been “holding that line.”
Google AI Search Is Cutting Reddit’s Traffic
The bigger story behind the change is search. Reddit said its search referral traffic “was down meaningfully in Q3,” with logged-out and web visitors hit hardest. In October, search traffic fell by more than 1 million referrals per week on average. If that continues, Reddit warned that daily active uniques could drop by a low double-digit percentage in Q4 from about 130 million.
Huffman told CNBC the decline is tied to Google’s “shift to AI mode and AI overviews,” calling it “a fundamental shift in how the Google product works.” Google is pushing that same AI experience harder, as it showed this week by expanding ads in AI Mode to more countries. Other platforms are moving the other way: Discord is opening some messages to Google Search.
Reddit’s plan is to rely less on search and more on users who come directly. Logged-in and app users make up over 80% of its monetization, and both groups grew quarter over quarter. That fits other recent product changes, such as the new For You feed.
Reddit Q3 2026 Results at a Glance
- Revenue: $895 million, up 53% year over year
- Net income: $283 million; diluted EPS of $1.40
- Daily active uniques: 130.3 million, up 12%; U.S. users down 2% to 50.7 million
- Q4 revenue outlook: $1.0 billion to $1.03 billion
Revenue and earnings beat Wall Street estimates, but the Q4 forecast came in below the $1.05 billion analysts expected, according to CNBC. Reddit shares fell more than 15% after the report.
What It Means for You
If you read Reddit threads from Google results without an account, that may soon stop working, starting in a handful of countries outside the U.S. Reddit says it does not need to know your real identity, so a free account with a username is likely to be enough. Which countries are in the first test has not been announced.
