Turkey Social Media Age Verification Begins November 1: Key Rules

Turkey social media age verification starts November 1: under-15s are barred and new users verify via e-Devlet. Existing accounts get until March 2027.

Turkey social media age verification becomes mandatory on November 1, 2026. Turkey has decided that children under 15 can no longer open social media accounts, and every new user will have to prove their age through e-Devlet, the government’s official digital services portal. The Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye’s Cyber Security Directorate shared the details in an official statement.

    What Turkey Has Decided

The rules come from a regulation published in Turkey’s Official Gazette on October 10, 2026, based on a law passed by parliament in April. Under the new framework:

    • Users under 15 cannot use social media platforms.
    • Users aged 15 to 18 must get a separate, safer service.
    • Platforms must offer high privacy settings for younger users, along with parental control tools.
    • Age verification is mandatory for all new accounts from November 1, 2026.
    • Existing accounts have until March 31, 2027 to complete verification.

We first covered the regulation when it was published, in our report on Turkey’s strict 15-year age limit for social media.

How Turkey Social Media Age Verification Works

For readers outside Turkey: e-Devlet is the national portal that citizens use for government services, from tax records to court documents. Users will log in to e-Devlet, create an “age verification token” and share it with the social media platform.

The key detail is privacy. According to the regulation, the token only tells the platform whether the user is over 15 and whether they are over 18. Platforms do not receive names, ID numbers or any other identity data. The directorate says the technical steps will be shared gradually, and the process should only be done on turkiye.gov.tr or the official e-Devlet mobile app.

Some platforms are already moving. Twitch has introduced a 15-year age restriction for Turkish users ahead of the deadline.

    Warning About Age Verification Scams

The statement also warns that scammers may exploit the new rules. Fraudsters may try to collect fees or personal information by posing as an age verification service, so users should ignore any request that does not come through e-Devlet. The directorate says: “e-Devlet passwords, SMS verification codes, credit or debit card details and account information should never be shared with any person, institution or platform.”

Suspicious websites and messages can be reported to the directorate through its official reporting page.

    Part of a Global Trend

Turkey is not alone. Australia has banned social media for under-16s, and the UK is enforcing age checks under its Online Safety Act, which recently survived a court challenge from Meta, TikTok and X. Turkey’s approach stands out by tying verification to a state identity system while keeping personal data away from platforms.
