ChatGPT Account Switching Arrives on iPhone and Android Apps

OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT account switching to its iOS and Android apps, letting users stay signed in to two ChatGPT accounts at once and jump between them without logging out. The change appeared in the ChatGPT release notes on October 30, 2026, after the feature had been available only on the web.
The update targets a common annoyance: people who keep a work account and a personal account had to sign out and back in every time they wanted to move between the two on their phone.
How ChatGPT Account Switching Works on Mobile
According to OpenAI’s help center guide, the switcher lives in the app’s settings. To add a second account:
- Open Settings in the ChatGPT app.
- Tap Switch account, then Add account.
- Sign in to the account you want to add, or create a new one.
Only one account is active at a time. Switching back is done from the same Switch account menu, where a checkmark marks the active profile. You can own more than two ChatGPT accounts, but only two can be signed in at the same time, so adding a third means logging out of one first. A newly created second account starts on the Free plan and needs no payment.
What Stays Separate
OpenAI stresses that switching is not merging. Chats, memory, files, settings and workspaces stay tied to each account, and nothing moves between them. Billing is also separate, so a Plus or Pro plan on one account does not carry over to the other. That matters after the company’s recent ChatGPT Pro usage limits change, since higher limits apply only to the account that pays for them.
Notifications can arrive for both signed-in accounts, and tapping one for the inactive account switches to it automatically. In managed workspaces, administrators can decide whether account switching is allowed at all.
The rollout is gradual. If Switch account does not show up in Settings yet, the feature has not reached that app. OpenAI says desktop support is coming soon.
OpenAI Hints at More Usage Resets
OpenAI’s Thibault Sottiaux announced the mobile switcher on X as part of a daily series of updates, and added a teaser about usage resets over the next two days:
Day 26/ You can now easily switch between multiple accounts on mobile, and coming soon to desktop too. Next two days will be resets… banked… do with this what you may 👀.

OpenAI has not detailed how the banked resets will work this time. Earlier in October, the company loaded a banked reset into paid accounts during its GPT-6 launch week, restoring usage for subscribers.
The move comes as AI rivals compete on plan flexibility, with Anthropic recently introducing its Claude Ultra plan.
OpenAI has also been adjusting the app for families, including new ChatGPT teen safety limits, where keeping separate accounts for different users remains important.
