Today (December 3, 2024), a giant asteroid named 2020 XR will pass very close to Earth in a live broadcast that will begin at 21:30 (Türkiye GMT+03:00). The celestial body, estimated to be between 290 and 650 meters in diameter, is compared to a medium-sized skyscraper. The gigantic asteroid will pass 2.2 million kilometers from Earth, about 5.7 times the distance between us and the Moon. So, how to watch the live stream?
2020 XR asteroid will pass by Earth! Live broadcast starts at 21:30 (GMT+03:00)
Although classified as “potentially hazardous” by NASA’s Center for the Study of Near Earth Objects (CNEOS), researchers are clear that this transit poses no risk. So there is apparently nothing to worry about. According to scientists, such close transits already occur once a year and are constantly monitored.
For those who don’t want to miss tonight’s celestial event, the Virtual Telescope Project will broadcast it live on December 3, 2024 at 21:30. Led by Italian astrophysicist Gianluca Masi, the project will show the asteroid at its brightest and closest to Earth.
Meanwhile, according to Masi, such events are a great opportunity for sky and space enthusiasts as well as scientists. Because such close observation of the asteroid allows us to better understand the dynamics of the Solar System and improve our monitoring of potential hazards.
