In the digital world, where users face new security threats daily, a milestone has been reached. Operation Synergia II, coordinated by INTERPOL, has become a nightmare for cybercriminals. Thanks to this large-scale operation, illegal servers and infrastructures worldwide were identified and shut down. So, what are the details behind this operation?
22,000 IP addresses tracked and shut down in cyber operation
During Operation Synergia II, which lasted from early April to the end of August, 41 individuals were detained, and 22,000 IP addresses were blocked. A total of 1,037 servers were shut down, and 30,000 potentially harmful IP addresses were identified worldwide.
Key regions of the operation included Hong Kong, Mongolia, Macau, and Estonia. Neal Jetton, Director of INTERPOL’s Cybercrime Directorate, emphasized the importance of collaboration between member countries in the operation’s success, saying, “The global nature of cybercrime requires a global response.”
INTERPOL pointed out that artificial intelligence has made it easier for cybercriminals. Specifically, ‘Generative AI’ technology allows phishing emails to be created in multiple languages and appear more convincing. INTERPOL also reported a 40% increase this year in data stolen through info-stealers on the dark web. Additionally, a 70% increase in ransomware attacks worldwide highlights the growing professionalism in cybercrime.
During the operation, private security firms Group-IB, Kaspersky, and Team Cymru played a crucial role in identifying cyber threats. These firms shared their telemetry data with law enforcement, helping to pinpoint harmful servers. According to the data collected, around 22,800 IP addresses were flagged as harmful, and by the end of the operation, 59 servers and 43 electronic devices were seized.
Do you think these types of operations are sufficient for cybersecurity? Should more comprehensive measures be taken against cybercrime? Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments!
