There’s an unwavering rule in the world of cinema: A high-grossing film inevitably leads to sequels. This rule also applied to “Minecraft,” one of this year’s most surprising successes. Having grossed $957 million worldwide, the film has secured official approval for a second installment. Warner Bros. has also shared the sequel’s release date with moviegoers.
The first Minecraft film surprised at the box office
Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the film surprised both critics and audiences with its unexpected humor and entertaining narrative. The film, adapted from a video game focused on creativity, saw such commercial success that a sequel was inevitable. According to a statement from Warner Bros., the second “Minecraft” film will be released on July 23, 2027. This date falls approximately two years after the release of the first film.

The behind-the-scenes team is also largely protected. Jared Hess, the director of the first film and known for productions like “Napoleon Dynamite,” will also direct the sequel. The acclaimed director will also co-write the script with Chris Galletta. The production team includes veterans such as Mary Parent, Roy Lee, and Eric McLeod, along with Jason Momoa.
“Minecraft” put to rest any questions about how an open-world construction game could be turned into a successful feature film. Critics praised the film for its clever script and original humor, and it was particularly praised for its theme of “standing up against a world that stifles free thought and creativity.” The film is currently the second-highest-grossing film of 2025. Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch” topped the list with $1.03 billion in box office revenue.
