Apple has received a new patent that suggests future iPhone models may offer more Action buttons. In fact, it would not be correct to say that it is only for iPhone models. It seems that the new patent indicates that similar buttons are planned not only for iPhones, but also for iPad and Mac devices.
Apple has received a new patent: iPhones could get a new Action Button
First of all, let’s say that Apple’s patents usually remain at the concept stage and often don’t reach the consumer. For those of you who don’t know what an Action button is, it’s a physical control button that allows users to customize certain tasks.
For example, you can open an app, activate a Focus mode, take a photo, or run different shortcuts with this button. The button first appeared on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models, but it has reached an even wider user base in the iPhone 16 series.
According to the new patent, Apple could remove the volume control buttons and replace them with two customizable Action buttons. In other words, there could be three Action buttons on the left side of the iPhone. There’s also talk of such buttons on the iPad and Mac devices, but that’s not expected to happen in the short term.
Meanwhile, one of the biggest limitations at the moment is that these buttons only work with long presses. Judging from the feedback shared, users expect more functionality such as short or double clicks. You can find the full details of the patent here. What do you think about this?
