The Star Wars franchise continues its return to the big screen. The series, which will premiere next year with “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” is also releasing a new film the following year. Filming began this week and is titled Star Wars: Starfighter.
Star Wars: Starfighter is here
Along with the production of “Starfighter,” starring Ryan Gosling, the first image from the film has been released. The cast includes the previously announced Ryan Gosling, Mia Goth, and Matt Smith, along with newcomers. Flynn Gray, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings also appear in the film.

Star Wars: Starfighter will be released on May 28, 2027. The film is directed by Shawn Levy, known for his work on “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Stranger Things.” The screenplay is written by Jonathan Tropper.
The film’s story takes place a few years after the final trilogy, but it tells a unique adventure independent of the main series. The film will not be a sequel or a prequel, but a new side story. Director Shawn Levy describes the film as, “This isn’t a prequel or a sequel; it’s a new adventure.”
In previous interviews, Director Shawn Levy has described this project as “very special.” Levy’s success with popular films like “Stranger Things” has generated high expectations for “Starfighter.”
