After more than three decades, Microsoft is finally redesigning the Run dialog box in Windows. After fulfilling its promise to add dark mode to Run, the company is now testing a refreshed design that matches the overall aesthetic of Windows 11. X user Phantomofearth discovered the modern Run dialog box in the latest preview builds of Windows 11.
The Run window is getting a makeover
The revamped Run prompt closely resembles a modern launcher, but its functionality remains the same. The Run command has been a part of Windows since Windows 95.

This feature allows advanced users to quickly launch applications with shortcuts like “mspaint” for Microsoft Paint, “calc” for Calculator, and “dxdiag” for DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
For users who dislike this revamp, there’s also an option to turn the modern Run dialog box on or off in Windows 11’s advanced system settings. Microsoft hasn’t officially announced this modern Run prompt yet, but it’s expected to appear in official builds in the coming weeks.
Applications like Raycast, recently introduced to Windows, have provided Microsoft with features like a powerful launcher, clipboard manager, and shortcut system. This is a development expected to push Microsoft to transform Run into a modern launcher, as it has done in recent years with tools like Command Palette and PowerToys Run.
