New information has emerged about the film “Artificial,” which chronicles the turbulent era at OpenAI. The dismissal and subsequent swift return of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, one of the most talked-about events in the world of artificial intelligence in 2023, is being brought to the big screen. The role of Elon Musk, one of the company’s founders, has also been confirmed in the film, which is currently in production. The role has been cast in Ike Barinholtz, known primarily for his comedic work.
Ike Barinholtz to play Musk in the new film
Barinholtz has worked on projects such as The Mindy Project and Suicide Squad. The actor’s portrayal of Elon Musk, a serious figure in the tech and business world, is considered a sign of the film’s anticipated humorous tone. Written by comedy writer Simon Rich, the film deviates from traditional biopics in its narrative style. Rich is known for his work on the series “Man Seeking Woman.”

The production is being produced under the banner of Amazon MGM. Luca Guadagnino, most recently known for his work on Challengers, is in the director’s chair. Guadagnino achieved international success with Call Me by Your Name. The film explores not only Sam Altman’s dismissal and his subsequent return to the CEO role at OpenAI with Microsoft’s support, but also the company’s founding years.
Altman is played by Andrew Garfield. Garfield previously starred in a tech-themed production as Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network. OpenAI’s former CTO, Mira Murati, is played by Monica Barbaro.
Murati briefly served as interim CEO during Altman’s firing. Yuri Borisov plays Ilya Sutskever, one of the company’s co-founders and a key figure in Altman’s dismissal. Borisov’s performance in Anora was a notable success.
Filming on Artificial recently began in Italy and is scheduled to conclude in August. Following post-production, the film will be released in the first half of 2026. While the film has often been compared to The Social Network in terms of production, content, and tone, the scriptwriter and cast appear to have opted for a more humorous tone.
