During Apple’s product announcement week earlier this month, which saw updates to the iPad Air and the debut of the MacBook Neo, many expected the entry-level iPad to receive an update as well. However, the week concluded without a new basic iPad model being revealed.
The Countdown Begins for the Apple Intelligence-Powered iPad
According to the latest insights from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s most affordable iPad is now scheduled for release in the first half of 2026. The launch is anticipated during the iOS 26.4 cycle, which runs through May. With the iOS 26.4 update reaching the Release Candidate (RC) stage last week, signs point toward an April or May debut, depending on supply chain conditions.

The most significant hardware upgrade will be the transition from the A16 chip (used in the iPhone 14 Pro series) to the A18 processor found in the iPhone 16 series. This leap in performance will finally bring Apple Intelligence support to the entry-level lineup. These AI capabilities are expected to expand further with iOS 26.5, following the Siri enhancements promised at WWDC24.
Custom Silicon: C1 Modem and N1 Chips
Unconfirmed rumors suggest that the new affordable iPad might also feature Apple’s in-house C1 modem and N1 connectivity chip. While the device is primarily a processor-focused refresh, the pricing strategy has raised eyebrows. When bundled with a Magic Keyboard Folio, the total cost reaches $598—just one dollar cheaper than Apple’s new entry-level laptop, the MacBook Neo.
What are your thoughts on this processor and AI-focused hardware leap? Given the potential price point, would you choose the new iPad over a MacBook Neo? Share your thoughts in the comments!
