A new AI-based weapon detection system to be integrated into New York’s subway system is starting to be tested to enhance the metropolis’s security. Announced by the Mayor, the initiative aims to provide passengers with a sense of safety.

These scanners will be positioned at the turnstile gates of the stations, detecting if a person is carrying a weapon. Developed by the American company Evolv Technology, the system uses low-frequency electromagnetic fields and sensors to detect objects in bags, backpacks, or under clothing.

The system’s artificial intelligence evaluates the detected information and raises an alarm if it finds a suspicious object. According to the manufacturer, the technology can recognize the signatures of all common weapons. Evolv’s scanners are already in use in some locations.

For instance, they are used at the Mets baseball stadium, a hospital in the Bronx, and some cultural venues in the city. However, the system has sparked some controversy. The U.S. Competition Authority is investigating whether Evolv’s AI recognition system works as advertised.

According to Mayor Eric Adams’s statement to CBS, the test will start after three months. The New York Police is required to announce the use of surveillance technology 90 days in advance, hence the delay.

This period will be used to evaluate systems from other suppliers and ensure the smooth commencement of the pilot project. Adams did not specify where and how many scanners would be used.

The introduction of this system was motivated by an armed attack in Brooklyn. Adams, known for his interest in technology, stated, “I would have preferred not to experience these situations, but we must accept life as it is and work to make it as it should be.”
