Amazon has pulled the plug on its free, ad-supported streaming platform Freevee, moving all of its content to Prime Video. The platform, which was recently known as IMDb Freedive and IMDb TV, will be shutting down in the coming weeks.
Amazon has pulled the plug on Freevee
Freevee users will now be able to find all of the platform’s content on Prime Video. In regions where Freevee is available, such as the US, UK, and Germany, users will be able to access titles such as Jury Duty, Bosch: Legacy, Neighbors, and Alex Rider under the “Watch for Free” tag.
“We have decided to phase out the Freevee brand in order to provide a simpler viewing experience for customers. There will be no change to the content available for Prime members,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. Accordingly, users who are not Prime members will continue to have access to Amazon MGM Studios’ productions.
The decision to shut down Freevee comes after Amazon added ads to its Prime Video service earlier this year. Since both Freevee and Prime Video offer similar ad-supported tiers, it was inevitable that one of the platforms would be discontinued.
Freevee productions are currently integrated with Amazon MGM Studio and Prime Video. Therefore, the company is not expected to close its teams working for Freevee. Of course, it is not yet clear whether the content will be offered in countries where Freevee is not available.
