AMD’s new move in the desktop APU space may not be as anticipated. While it was thought that the Ryzen 9000G series would feature processors featuring the Zen 5 architecture, recent leaks have proven these expectations to be false. According to information shared on the China-based Chiphell forum, the new Ryzen 9000G processors, to be introduced under the name Ryzen 9000G, may not represent a major architectural leap forward, but rather a refreshed version of the existing Ryzen 8000G series.
AMD Working on 8000G Refresh Processors
The Ryzen 9000G series is being developed to target the AM5 platform. It was previously claimed that this series would combine the Zen 5 core architecture with the RDNA 3.5 graphics architecture. However, recent reports suggest that this combination will not materialize, and instead, it will feature an update of the Zen 4-based 8000G architecture.

If this information is true, the arrival of Zen 5-based Strix Point APUs on desktops could be delayed until 2026 at the earliest. AMD has been known to have followed a similar strategy in the past. For example, some G-series processors, such as the Ryzen 6000G series, were launched as updated versions of existing designs before moving to an entirely new architecture. Given that the Ryzen G family has historically not adopted major architectural updates for every series, a picture consistent with these recent leaks emerges.
So far, there are no official specifications, SKU counts, or compatibility information from motherboard manufacturers regarding the Ryzen 9000G series. This uncertainty raises questions about the comprehensiveness of the new series.
However, if current information is accurate, it is anticipated that the Zen 5 architecture-based models, which will offer a truly innovative solution for desktop APU users, will be included in the Ryzen 10000G series.
No official announcement has yet been made by AMD. The picture will become clearer once the release date, technical details, and graphics unit features of these new processors, which will carry the Ryzen 9000G name, become clearer. However, the current outlook bodes disappointment for users who were waiting for the Ryzen 9000G series in anticipation of Zen 5.
