AMD loses to NVIDIA in chip race for Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo allegedly demanded low energy consumption in portable mode in the new Switch model. Nintendo, which wanted the device to operate with 5W power consumption in portable mode, made this demand mandatory by prioritizing battery life and portability of the device.

Although AMD proposed a high-performance chip, it stated that this chip could only provide the best performance at 15W power consumption. However, Nintendo rejected AMD’s proposal, considering factors such as battery capacity and the weight of the device.

At this point, NVIDIA stepped in and offered a solution that could deliver high performance with lower power consumption. NVIDIA’s T239 chip, with its 8-core Cortex-A78 processor and 1536 CUDA cores, was Nintendo’s choice as a lower cost and energy efficient alternative. The cost advantage of this chip was also an important factor for Nintendo, as portable game consoles are a particularly price-sensitive market.

The new Nintendo Switch 2 will come with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It will also allegedly have a 20Wh battery, offering slightly longer battery life than the current Switch.
