AMD has officially confirmed that the Fluid Motion Frames (FMF) 2.1 technology that has excited gamers is under development. The new version will offer much higher image quality compared to FMF 2.0 and will be compatible with previous generation AMD GPUs without requiring any new hardware. Here are the details…
AMD competes with Nvidia Smooth Motion with Fluid Motion Frames (FMF) 2.1!
AMD’s FMF 2.1 update will be integrated into the Adrenalin Edition driver within the AMD HYPR-RX software package. In fact, FMF 2.0 was introduced in October 2024, but it fell behind Nvidia’s Smooth Motion technology. Users reported that there were image corruptions and artificial feelings in FMF 2.0. Currently, FMF 2.1 is expected to fix these problems and provide a smoother and higher quality gaming experience.

FMF 2.1 provides much smoother visuals by increasing frame rate in Vulkan, DirectX 11/12 and OpenGL supported games. Unlike technologies that require special AI hardware such as Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR 3, FMF 2.1 works at the driver level, so it can offer performance improvements even on older systems.
AMD has not yet announced a release date for FMF 2.1. However, we expect it to be released in parallel with the launch of the Radeon RX 9070 series GPUs. What do you think about this technology? Do you think FMF 2.1 can compete with Nvidia’s Smooth Motion technology? Is the fact that it does not require new hardware a significant advantage for AMD users?
