AMD has revealed a major security vulnerability affecting hundreds of millions of its processors dating back to 2006. The vulnerability, dubbed Sinkhole, allows hackers to infiltrate systems and work surreptitiously. AMD also said it would not provide updates to some processors.
AMD processors that will not receive updates against the Sinkhole vulnerability
AMD stated that the Sinkhole vulnerability is difficult to exploit and can be used by specific hacker groups in targeted attacks. Therefore, it claimed that individual users are not at high risk. However, due to the high number of affected processors, AMD will bypass some models.
AMD stated that it will defend its corporate customers at the highest possible level. In this context, it has provided updates to new models, including EPYC server chips and new Ryzen desktop and laptop processors.
Here are the AMD processors that have received updates against the Sinkhole vulnerability:
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation EPYC server chips
- Ryzen 5000, 4000 and 3000 series
- Ryzen Threadripper Pro and 3000 series
- AMD Athlon processors
- AMD Radeon GPU models
- However, the Ryzen 1000/2000 and the first Threadripper models will not receive updates. The company said these processors have completed the standard support period.
It is possible that the vulnerability could affect the processors in terms of performance. However, AMD said it continues to test updates to verify compatibility. Security experts also said there was no major attack.
