AMD recently announced FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4), its next-generation upscaling technology, at CES 2025. FSR 4 offers a significant improvement in image quality over previous versions, but will only work with AMD’s new RX 9000 series GPUs. Unfortunately, it focuses the technology on a limited set of hardware rather than a wide range of users. Here are the details…
AMD FSR 4 will only work with the RX 9000 series!
First of all, it’s worth noting that the FSR 4 technology was developed using an AI-driven method instead of the Lanczos algorithm used in previous generations. In the first tests, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart at 4K resolution, FSR 4 delivered much sharper, more detailed and believable images than FSR 3. In particular, particle effects, transparent surfaces and character detail were significantly improved.
AMD’s previous FSR versions offered broad hardware compatibility, as it was a universal algorithm that did not use AI. However, with FSR 4, the move to AI only made it compatible with GPUs with AI cores, such as the RX 9000 series. This, in turn, could cause AMD to lose its previous “universal compatibility” advantage.
Meanwhile, AMD’s FSR 4 technology faces stiff competition from NVIDIA’s new DLSS 4 technology. While DLSS 4 is compatible with the entire RTX series (from RTX 20 onwards), FSR 4 is limited to the RX 9000 series, which could put a strain on AMD’s competitiveness.
What do you think about this? Do you think AMD’s FSR 4 technology can compete with NVIDIA in the AI-enhanced upgrade market? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below…
