At the recent CES 2025 event, AMD unveiled the Ryzen 9900X3D and 9950X3D processors. However, AMD has confirmed that in terms of gaming performance, these new processors do not make a huge leap compared to their predecessor, the 9800X3D. So, 9800X3D users can breathe a sigh of relief. The
gaming performance of AMD’s new Ryzen 9900X3D and 9950X3D processors is similar to the 9800X3D
In an interview with VideoGamer, Martijn Boonstra, AMD’s director of product development, stated that the new chips provide an advantage in some scenarios, but in other cases these advantages are offset. Therefore, the overall performance is comparable to the 9800X3D. Technical details:

- Number of cores: The 9900X3D and 9950X3D have 12- and 16-core designs respectively. This means they have the potential to provide better performance in modern games. However, the 9800X3D’s single CCD structure allows it to maintain a competitive advantage in some situations despite having fewer cores.
- Frequency increase: The new processors can reach maximum speeds of 5.5 GHz and 5.7 GHz respectively. In contrast, the 9800X3D is limited to 5.2 GHz. However, it is more efficient thanks to its lower energy consumption (120 W TDP). On the other hand, the 9950X3D’s TDP is quite high at 170 W.
Estimated prices for the new models in the US are $629 and $729 respectively. In comparison, the 9800X3D is priced under $400, making it a budget-friendly option compared to new processors at a similar level.
If you play core-intensive modern games, the newer models may give you a slight advantage. However, in terms of energy consumption, cost and balanced performance, the 9800X3D is still a very attractive option.
