Google is preparing a revolutionary innovation for the Android 17 Always on Display (AOD) feature. This new system, called “Min Mode,” discovered by developers, will transform AOD screens from a passive notification area into an interactive app area.
What are Android 17 Always on Display and “Min Mode”?
“Min Mode” aims to radically change the always-on display (AOD) experience on Android phones. The current AOD typically only displays the clock and notification icons. However, with this new feature, apps will be able to display full-screen, interactive information even when the screen is off.

The first tests of this new feature are being conducted on Google Maps. When the screen goes to sleep, the system will switch from the standard AOD to “Min Mode” AOD. This allows users to see navigation instructions in full screen without unlocking the phone. Some images also suggest that the feature can be activated with the power button.
This system simplifies the interface to a single color and removes unnecessary images. This minimizes battery consumption. Google has also developed a solution to prevent OLED screen burn-in. The system will shift the display pixel by pixel every 60 seconds to prevent damage to the panel.
Future Plans and Other Applications
While “Min Mode” is being tested initially in Google Maps, it could be used in other applications in the future. It holds great potential, especially for apps that display real-time data, such as music, fitness, or weather. This innovation is expected to be available with Android 17.
